Scott Walker, popstar turned avant-garde icon, passes away aged 76

American born, British singer and songwriter Scott Walker has passed away at the age of 76, as confirmed by his label 4AD.

Walker found his initial burst of fame with The Walker Brothers in the mid-to-late 1960s, and begun releasing solo work in 1967. Since then his music moved in an ever more avant-garde direction, and during his life he worked alongside Nick Cave, Pulp, Bob Dylan and many others.

The immensely influential career of Scott Walker has come to a close. Confirmed by his label this morning, the singer has died at the age of 76.

After breaking from The Walker Brothers, Scott’s first four solo albums (simply titled Scott 1, 2, 3 and 4) capitalised on the pop group’s success, performing extremely well in Britain in particular.

His solo work showcased a darker and more left-of-field style that he would become synonymous with, presenting his heart-stopping baritone and idiosyncratic lyrics in a new, refreshing light.

His work as a solo musician, a producer, and alongside The Walker Brothers continued to be praised and reappraised throughout his lifetime, his 2006 album The Drift scoring some of the year’s most glowing critical acclaim.
