The first event in established Melbourne label Chapter Music’s calendar are the interstate launch shows for The Stevens and Primitive Calculators – both of which will be taking place at the Red Rattler Theatre this weekend in Sydney. The former are a we have not yet introduced on Happy, so lets get this business out of the way first. The Stevens are four dudes outta Melbourne who have since 2011 been making something in between clean-scrubbed-punk/DIY and indie jangle with lyrics that don’t make literal sense, succinctly nailing the Chapter Music brief. They’re fun and upbeat yet sombre and dissociatiatively weird. Their songs generally don’t last much longer than 2 minutes so it would be silly not to check ’em out – if you don’t like it, at least you aren’t wasting much time.
Tonight (Fri 17th Jan), Sydneysiders can catch the launch of A History Of Hygiene, the band’s latest release which clocks in at 44 minutes but features a whopping 24 tracks, at the Red Rattler Theatre in Marrickville. It’s $10 on the door and you’ll be getting a monster of a show with Happy faves Day Ravies, Bed Wettin’ Bad Boys and Nathan Roche also on tonights bill. How good is that? The next night, the same venue will be host to Primitive Calculators, which will set you back an extra two bucks. If you haven’t listened to the debut studio LP The World Is Fucked from the 70’s synth-punks, I’ll give you a little tip: the early morning is not a good time to do it – you’re gonna need a stiff drink before and after. Supports for Primitive Calculators will be Ghastly Spats and Litter.
Returning to the matter of The Stevens, the quartet will be continuing north to Brisbane for the weekend, playing shows on Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th of Jan at Trainspotters and Greenslopes Bowling Club respectively. For all you cheapskates out there, Trainspotters will be absolutely free of charge, plus you’ll be getting some crunch-punk tunes from Martyr Privates and some lo-fi jangle from Thigh Master. I’m aware that this article is just throwing band names and interstate event information at you here there and everywhere, so check out the brief deets of the shows below.
