Frankenstein’s instrument: you’ll sleep with the lights on after hearing The Apprehension Engine

Imagine all your worst fears compacted into one extremely eerie yet insanely inventive instrument. Yes, nightmares really do come true with The Apprehension Engine, one of the most unusual musical instruments in existence.

Duggan-Smith’s unit comes fully equipped with a spring reverb, suspended metal parts that can be played either percussively or with a bow, and a string which can be played with an Ebow.

This one-off, home-made device of terror was created by Tony Duggan-Smith, a Canadian guitar maker who created the hellish device for Mark Korven. Korven is best known for his soundtrack work on The VVitch, a 2015 supernatural horror film set in 1630 New England. Enough said.

Duggan-Smith’s unit comes fully equipped with a spring reverb, suspended metal parts that can be played either percussively or with a bow, and a string which can be played with an Ebow. This seriously terrifying  sounding machine resembles (if not tops) something that would be produced by a synthesiser, however the tones are much more raw and realistic.

The possibility of creating more of these machines may be on the cards for Duggan-Smith, who undoubtedly enjoys the feeling of his hairs standing on end. Watch the video below to be immersed in your own personal horror movie. You may want to leave the lights on for this one.
