Pushing envelopes is what Slumberhaze do, finding the happy medium between ambient and groovy, somewhere along the lines of TV On The Radio meets a Mogwai remix album. Pioneers of the post-rock/hip-hop mashup genre that we didn’t know needed to exist, the band are playing their second show of the year tonight (Fri 31 Jan) at The Standard alongside Little Fox, ShereKhan and The Coconut Ruffs.
Staying quiet after their critically acclaimed Rhyme Rhythm & Romance (Pt. 1), released in May last year, this show will be an opportunity to catch some new material alongside the fiddly post-rock guitar canoodling that we have come to love from the spooky hip-pop trio. In fact, it is this silence that has kept them off the Happy pages for so long, yet a social media announcement from the group earlier this month suggests that they have ‘new shit that needs to get on the streets’. Either they’ve turned to pushing illicit chemical substances or they’ve written some new songs – either way, I’m happy.
Sherekhan are a Wollongong based four piece who make ambient blues music, The Coconut Ruffs make soulful garage-calypso while Little Fox make the kind of music you’d expect a band called Little Fox to make. If you reckon you should get out and see more live music, you should make this show the one that breaks the drought. Tickets are available from moshtix or will be $10 on the door. Set a few bucks aside for beers too, the bar ain’t the cheapest.
