Featuring songs by Bowie, The Flaming Lips and Brian Eno, SpongeBob The Musical is coming to Broadway

I guess it’s a good day for SpongeBob fans. Well I guess every day is now, considering how hard our little SquarePants has meme’d himself into pop culture.

We just witnessed that brutal mashup of Black Sabbath’s War Pigs with SpongeBob footage, and now we hear that a musical based on the show is coming to Broadway. Oh, and it features songs from David Bowie and The Flaming Lips, among others. What a time to be alive in Bikini Bottom.

This can’t be real. SpongeBob SquarePants is taking the Broadway stage, featuring tunes written by a couple of the universe’s best artists.

Back in 2015, it was announced that David Bowie, the Flaming Lips, T.I., members of Aerosmith, and several other artists had contributed music for a new Spongebob Squarepants musical. At the time, it was announced that the musical was planning a Broadway run for the 2016-2017 season.

Now, the Broadway premiere date for The Spongebob Musical has been announced: it opens December 4 at the Palace Theatre, with previews starting in November.

Bowie was a Spongebob fan, appearing in an episode of the show as the emperor Lord Royal Highness. His song with Brian Eno, No Control, appears in the new musical. The Flaming Lips’ song Tomorrow Is was penned specifically for the musical, as was Steven Tyler and Joe Perry’s Bikini Bottom Boogie. – Pitchfork
