Spotify is making moves to protect real artists.
It’s undeniable that labelling AI artists is a necessary step to benefit the careers of real musicians.
AI music can certainly be deceptive to many, and this deception is what Spotify is attempting to combat.
In a statement, Spotify shared that “True artist-fan connection can only be built on a foundation of trust and authenticity.
“In music, that means listeners need to be able to trust that the artist behind the music is who they say they are.
“That’s more essential than ever in the age of generative AI.”
The rollout of the AI Persona badge will kick off in September.
Spotify also won’t be including any of the labelled AI Personas in editorial or algorithmic recommendations.
Which means you won’t be running the risk of streaming any of these artists.
It also means that artists can worry less about their new releases getting lost in the plethora of AI music uploaded to streaming platforms each day.
In the coming months, Spotify will also give its users the ability to report AI artist profiles.
At the end of the day, this is a good move in the right direction from Spotify.
But questions still remain, particularly revolving around real people who generate and upload AI tracks.
There’s also the question of Spotify’s AI use, such as in its own About The Song feature, which was recently pushed back on by Lorde for being inaccurate.
