Sydney artist Swaré runs us through each of his singles

Since releasing his debut single I Want You To Move last year, Sydney artist Swaré has firmly established himself as one of the city’s most exciting emerging artists.

With a string of consistently impressive singles under his belt, Swaré has quickly built himself a strong back catalogue of infectious tunes. So we caught up with the artist himself for a track by track run-down of each track he’s released to date.

Fresh off the release of his most recent single Chill With You, we caught up with Sydney artist Swaré for a track by track run-down on each of his singles.

I Want You To Move

I Want You To Move was the first track I released and I think for that reason it’ll always have a special place in my heart. Probably how my mum feels about my eldest brother. We worked really hard on that one in the studio. Michael McGlynn was the producer on that one and he spent hours trying out different things and working out the musical groove. A labour of love in the studio but it’s still probably the dearest track to me.

Remember

Remember was the second, more chilled tune I released. It was the first time I’d written about something more meaningful than going out and partying. Actually drawing from real life experiences that mattered to me and then putting that to music. And it was also the first time I’d made a video clip so that was a bonus milestone.

Purple Kites

Then came Purple Kites which was my take on a broody, soulful, almost R&B tune. Toby Chew (MOZA) co-produced that track and there’s a lot of his influence on it I think. He helped shift it in this bigger direction and watching him work is always great. I think a week after it dropped a friend texted saying “you’re on the radio.” I ran out to my car, turned the radio on then just danced around the yard.

Houston

Houston was the fourth track I released and it was a return to the sound I love the most; that kind of upbeat, disco kind of vibe. That one came together really quickly as I remember. I’d written the bass line and brought the foundations of it all. I remember writing the lyrics right there at the desk next to Toby, recording a line or two then writing the next part. I wasn’t feeling that confident and I said to Toby, “man, I just wish I could write cool lyrics.” Just sitting there mixing it all in he says “dude you just did!

Chill With You

Chill With You takes everything I loved the most out of those four tracks and brings in the things we didn’t get a chance to the first time round. I called Michael and said “I think I’ve just written the best song of my life, we need to get into the studio!” It’s the first time I worked with session players as well and that just changed everything in the best way. Jamie Cameron (drums) and Boris Thorpe (bass guitar) just took that song and brought it to another level.
