‘The Gravity Of Disbelief’ by This Dark Destiny is determined and deceptive

This Dark Destiny has crafted a thudding and harrowing debut LP that demonstrates a firm grip on the death-metal genre.

The Gravity Of Disbelief, the first LP from This Dark Destiny, took 3 years to write and record – and it shows. Its unrelenting barrage of epic, mammoth-sized tracks, explosive drumming and piercing guitar create a soundscape of pure death metal that has been meticulously crafted to hit the listener as hard as possible.

The unique trick of the LP is how it tricks the listener into a false sense of security before dropping the bombshell between their ears. Let’s touch on some of the most salient moments in the 8-track project.

This Dark Destiny

Opener Acolytes of December could have easily been called ‘Acolytes of Deception’. Two gorgeous, clean electrics play over each other in the introduction, with soft, melodic vocals. However, this soundscape dramatically shifts to some djent-style chugs and blood-curdled vocals. Welcome to The Gravity Of Disbelief.

Single The Great Collapse is next, notable for its epic, heavy guitar work and relentlessness drumming. Take note, aspiring heavy-rockers. The single has enough meat for a whole discussion, which you can read here.

The licks on Echoes Fading toy with an intriguing blend of resonance and dissonance, making for one of the album’s more fascinating tracks. Of Deepest Grey quips an emotional string-intro before letting the guitars out to play. Some haunting harmonies linger in the outro, resulting in a track that goes full circle—soft, loud, soft.

September’s Sorrow is a touching piano ballad that reminiscences on time gone by with another; “The rain won’t stop falling. My, how it falls for you”. We won’t spoil the ending for you, but yes, be prepared. Closer As The Last Leaf Falls clocks in at almost 10 minutes but pulls out just about every instrument in the book to maintain interest. It’s dynamic, it’s grandiose, and it’s the only way to finish an album this intense.

Frontman of This Dark Destiny comments that the album became what it was due to “incredible musicians who not only wanted to help make my vision a reality but who also made it their own”. Though the contributions that detail this album are indeed commendable, this is a humble comment to make. Without the frontman’s leading vision, and ability to piece this 10,000 piece puzzle together, the world of death metal wouldn’t have another full-length to grind teeth and head-bash over.
