Donovan releases an eerie and dreamlike music video for his 2010 song I Am The Shaman, directed by his old friend David Lynch.
I am the Shaman first appeared on Donovan’s 2010 album, Ritual Groove, which Lynch co-produced at his studio in Los Angeles. This new clip arrives after the veteran experimentalist celebrated his 75th birthday last week.
However, this new video centres around footage of Donovan performing the hollow tune with Lynchian touches throughout, including bizarre closeups of Donovan’s head shooting across star-filled skies.
“It was all impromptu. I visited the studio and David said … ‘Sit at the mics with your guitar Don’. David in same room behind control desk with my [wife] Linda [Lawrence],” Donovan said in a Facebook statement, recalling the process behind making the song with Lynch.
“He had asked me to only bring in a song just emerging, not anywhere near finished. We would see what happens. It happened! I composed extempore … the verses came naturally. New chord patterns effortlessly appeared.”
