WATCH: Hayley Mary – ‘The Chain’

Hayley Mary is back with her new single The Chain, her first dose of electrifying pop-rock since her debut release The Piss, The Perfume which sent her star bound at the start of this year – that is until the world came to a grinding halt, slamming on its breaks and leaving her whiplashed and chained down.

Hayley Mary couldn’t do a thing wrong when she debuted her first foray into solo music after a decade with The Jezabels, and her single The Chain draws on, and refines, everything that we have been encapsulated by from the start.

The evening Mary wrote The Chain she was scheduled to get on a plane to tour her luscious EP. It may well have been her saddest song yet, if not for the soaring instrumentation and a voice that oozes that quality of a complete superstar. Set to the backdrop of a lavish mansion, her music video directed by Tyson Perkins depicts the life she sees for herself – if she could just break the chains holding her down.

“It was a feeling I’d had before akin to depression that there is some kind of invisible magic chain holding me to earth, keeping me from moving forward or climbing higher, if I pull too hard on or try to escape from it, it seems to have devastating consequences behind or beneath me,” Hayley Mary described.

“It was an odd sort of happy-sad because for the first time, I felt like the chain not only held me down, it connected me to everything and everyone else”.
