White Lung

If Cheap Trick were slightly more badass and they had a female lead, they might sound a bit like White Lung. The band is a post punk four-piece from Canada and they have a 90’s encapsulating yet highly accessible sound.

Although, I can note that it would be remiss of me to make a big deal out of the fact that it’s mostly an all-woman punk band, I do want to note though that they are SO badass that I kind of want to be them when I grow up.

white lungIf you’re in need of a confidence boost, lend your ear holes to White Lung. You can smell their “don’t mess with us” attitude from here, and it smells good!

White Lung have released three albums, split between Deranged Records and Domino Recordings. The difference in the sound between their first two albums and their most current one, while not hugely obvious, is still distinct enough to notice.

Their debut album It’s the Evil which won 2010’s Punk Album of the Year characterized early angrier, discordant punk (if it’s possible for punk to have different levels of angry). Tracks like Wild Failure and Two Seen demonstrate the band’s true punk roots. On White Lung’s most recent album Deep Fantasy, they cool down slightly to bring us a more wholesome 90’s punk rock sound that most Gen Y’ers are probably used to.

White Lung have recently released two new singles: Blow it South and Down With You. The tracks are almost a perfect combination of their earlier and most current sounds. Of course, White Lung’s stupidly talented bass player Kenneth Williams is featured heavily featured on these tracks, which, as always is a great move for them.

The lead, Mish Way, so perfectly personifies the brand’s entire feel with her unabashed vocals. Ultimately, White Lung are constantly striving for that perfect imperfection that personifies their sound and they’re hitting the mark so well. Be sure to keep an eye out for more of their stuff on Bandcamp, its girl power for your later years.
