When it was announced in 2016 that there would be a remake of Disney’s beloved animated film Aladdin (1992), it was met with excitement and anticipation from fans of the original.
Fast-forward to 2019 and I’m not sure about you, but I’m really not feeling this remake. Full disclosure, I have not yet seen the film, however, the audio for the song Friend Like Me is out and I’m not okay with it.
The recreation of beloved Aladdin song Friend Like Me featuring Will Smith and DJ Khaled will crush your childhood dreams.
Starring Will Smith as the Genie, Mena Massoud as Aladdin, Naomi Scott as Jasmine and Marwan Kenzari as Jafar, the film’s recreation was directed by Guy Richie.
Starting off, the song fell victim to a notorious “another one” interjection from a certain hip hop personality and I knew this couldn’t be good. When a “you know it’s Will Smith and DJ Khalid” shout-out followed, I was speechless.
What went down in the next two minutes and 40 seconds was starkly different to Robin Williams’ original Friend Like Me, a song that overflowed with magic and playfulness. In contrast, the remake had a jarring hip-hop spin, a nasally pan flute melody as well as the sound of all my childhood dreams crashing to the ground.

Aladdin is in cinemas now , but instead, we highly recommend just watching the original :)
