Hayden Thorpe, formerly the frontman of eminent UK indie rock act Wild Beasts, has today announced his debut solo album Diviner.
Just last month Thorpe revealed his debut solo effort to the world; a spine-tingling composition also titled Diviner. Today he unveils the second piece of the puzzle, a song and accompanying music video by the name of Love Crimes.
Hayden Thorpe’s range is on full display with Love Crimes, the second single from his newly announced debut solo album.
Thorpe’s quivering falsetto stands front and centre through Love Crimes, as it did with Diviner and indeed most of his work fronting Wild Beasts. Beyond the timbre of his voice is a lyrical gift to be unpacked; the song meeting with notions of love and self-reflection.
The new single comes alongside a stunning clip directed by Alexandra Liveris. Following Thorpe on a journey through an idyllic yet somewhat alien coastal landscape, the colour masked video is a stunning accompaniment to another beautiful track from the artist.
Hayden Thorpe’s upcoming album Diviner represents a collection of his most inward songwriting to date, capturing a time when his life was utterly in flux. Thorpe says of Diviner:
“My adulthood was based on a certain belief system, a band, a family. When it shifted entirely, I had a ghost I had to find a new haunt for.”
“I broke up with myself. So this is a break-up album, but not about a relationship. It’s a break-up from a past self, it’s a breakup from the old idea of yourself and therefore every relationship, of all kinds, that you’ve ever had.”
The stripped-back and confidential qualities of Diviner and Love Crimes certainly fit the missive for what Thorpe is trying to achieve with his new work. We’re all ears for the album ahead.
