The porn industry could be coronavirus’ next victim

In recent news concerning the coronavirus, it has been revealed that the porn industry could be the next to shutdown. We’ve seen the pandemic impact all sectors of society, with health officials and governments encouraging social isolation to prevent the further spread of the disease.

So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the next industry to be shut down could be the porn industry, with many production companies already announcing that filming will be put on hold to ensure the health and safety of everyone on set.

The porn industry is set to be the next sector dramatically impacted by coronavirus.

It is no secret that the financial impacts of COVID-19 are having huge consequences on all industries across the world, with artists who are relying on the gig economy suffering particularly hard with the shutdown of most public gatherings. Now the porn industry in next in line, with American adult industry lobbying group The Free Speech Coalition urging for a voluntary shutdown across the sector:

“It’s dangerous to make porn right now.” Well known queer erotic artist Sam Morris stated, “It’s pretty much banned in many countries to even leave your house, therefore it’s almost impossible to make duo or group content.”

Currently, each production company is individually making decisions around whether or not they will stop shooting due to the pandemic. There seems to be a divide across the porn industry with studios admitting that the impacts of halting productions is already having repercussions:

“This all happened so quickly that we don’t have as much backlog as we would like,” commented Keith Miller, owner of Helix Studios in Las Vegas. “Our customers rely on us for new content so a halt in production would eventually impact our bottom line.”

Another interesting perspective around this topic is the effects that studio closures will have on performers and their income. Consumers who are signed to paid subscriptions are being urged to continue to fund their subscription, despite the promotions that may be a cheaper or cost-free option.

“It can be very tempting to sign up for the promotions PornHub are running to offer their premium service for free, but it’s more important than ever to keep paying for your porn (if you can) to support independent directors, producers, and performers.”
