Okay, brace yourself, epic instrumental post-rockers sleepmakeswaves have released their first single Something Like Avalanches off the upcoming mind exploder Love of Cartography and, dare I say it, this song is epic on fucking avalanche proportions.
What sound does an avalanche make? We’re not 100% sure, but here’s a track that sounds something like one.
For those who aren’t acquainted with the Sydney quartet, meet Kid and Otto on guitar, Tim on drums and triple threat Alex on bass, synth and piano. Since 2006, these Sydneysiders have carved out a hell of a name for themselves in the post-rock scene, both here and across the pond.
Dishing out EPs and ripping up stages in Australia, USA, UK and Europe with their debut ARIA nominated album …and so we destroyed everything, these guys have surely been blessed by the post-rock gods. The burning question is, does aforementioned newly released single actually sound something like an avalanche? Well, if by avalanche you mean a “large mass of material that moves rapidly down a mountain slope, sweeping everything in its path”, then yes. Loud, volatile and crushing, prepare to be overwhelmed by its sheer epicness.
Opening in an electro-rock terrain, we are soon led down a series of pulsating symphonies and softer expansive melodies. Hitting you left, right and centre, these rapid flows crash into the electronic layers and build a devastating wall of sonic madness. With instrumental spontaneity accelerating in mass and volume, the soaring guitars, thundering drums and echoic effects pedals engage you in their cinematic depth.
But, just when you feel the song couldn’t get any more intense, they unleash their secret weapon – climactic electro fury! With a deafening explosion of electronic rage that builds and builds and builds, no canyon, or mind, could escape the symphonic chaos. That is, until the eerily quiet outro seeps in and you finally get a chance to check your pulse.
Be prepared, the epic Love of Cartography album is coming (on July 4 to be exact) followed by a massive tour through July and August. Check out the sched below.
