Exclusive track from JON

We first came across the absolute undeniable talent that is JON about a month ago*, after browsing Bedlam Records’ exciting catalogue of artists. Born in Papua New Guinea, JON is now a Brisbane local. However, the hip-hop he makes is free of any recognizable trace to Australia. Forget what you know about Australian hip-hop (nasal accents, cheesy odes to summer and white guys in caps) and listen to JON with virginal ears.

JONPlastic Messiah is the contemplative older brother of JON’s other awesome, but entirely different, track Like Flow.

His slick video for Like Flow was premiered here on Happy only about a week ago. Now, we’ve got another treat for you. JON has written and recorded a track entitled Plastic Messiah. This unreleased beauty has been chilling in the Bedlam Records archives, and now we are absolutely stoked to lavish upon it the attention it deserves.

Jon writes that “Plastic Messiah was called Sleeping Patterns at first. The sample is from a 1950’s Hasbro Mr Potato Head ad, for the kids toys. It made me think of a song addressing the fake god complex of people who assume the role of the judge, and point fingers. I rap projecting the point of view of people who live outside the system.”

Plastic Messiah differs from what else I’d heard from JON. Where Like Flow is all good times, nostalgic throwbacks to the 80’s and a beat to cement a grin on your face, Plastic Messiah is modern, experimental and contemplative. It’s a really interesting, reeserved addition to JON’s catalogue of sound, and is leaving me anxious to hear more. We’ll have to wait to June 20 to get our hands on JON’s full debut EP H22. Until then, enjoy.

*Actually it was before that on May 14 .
