There’s a new beast roaming the streets of Melbourne, but don’t fret, this animal is anything but the ferocious label it has so cruelly been tagged with– they are what they say they are in childhood stories; big, friendly, furry giants.
But wait, I think I’ve got it all wrong. I think I’ve just lured you into a deadly trap where the threat of danger is very real. I’m watching you Bears… I thought I knew you when you said you just wanted to have a Little Fun.
We’re going on a Bears hunt, we’re going to catch a big one, what a beautiful day, you better be scared.
The sextet of psychedelic rock Bears, of Ryan Groenewald (vocals, guitar), Ryan Vasiliades (lead guitar), Mitch Peters (keys, guitar, vocals), Simon Yeomans (percussion, vocals), Brad Dadson (drums) and Gary Onans (bass) are an auspiciously deceptive sounding bunch of fellows. In this case, the more musicians the better – such an ambient sound with each note commanding its space allows for something rather bold to be crafted.
Formerly known as Hiding with Bears, their latest offering sees a more sinister sound compared to their EP The Watchmen, which shared strong influences from the likes of Tame Impala, The Beatles, Fleet Foxes and Bon Iver.
Their new single Little Fun is indeed pretty fun, if being ambushed by someone who wants to hurt you is your definition of fun, then it’s pretty damn fun!
The bluesy, down-tempo track is quite stripped back, allowing the expressive vocals to command the song. The opening echo of a two-person harmony paints this very vivid picture of encroaching revenge– the lyrics “I saw you darling, I saw you with another once again” underpinning this tension perfectly.
The early addition of guitars only makes for a more uneasy predicament – the slyly introduced guitars trap you in this reverie, just as your instincts experience a foreboding. The bear is the one with the tranquiliser gun and I’m sorry to tell you this, but you’ve just been shot my friend.
Catch the boys at their Little Fun Single Launch in Melbourne on the 30th of August at The Workers Club, Fitzroy (more info here). Little Fun is taken from Bears’ forthcoming self-titled debut EP and Happy is so excited to hear more!
