The Stevens – Hindsight

They’ve got those jangly guitars that everyone seems to love these days. Its a very happy kind of pop music that seems to be conducive with those coming out of Melbourne. It’s been described by the Guardian as that “Aussie slacker pop”, which is an interesting description but kind of fits perfectly with a lot of whats coming out of Australia at the moment.

the stevens

Laid-back garage pop rock from The Stevens will make you feel right at home, with they lo fi approach to creating some knockout tunes- very catchy and uber cool.

The Stevens describe themselves similarly as “scratchy pop”, which is lyrically melodic but largely centered around the guitarists Alex MacFarlane and Travis MacDonald. They’ve created a kind of home made/garage produced feeling with their songs, which more often than not isn’t successful but surprisingly works for these guys.

My personal favourite, Hindsight, off their new LP, shows the perfect combination of swelling guitars and melodic vocals, giving off some really good vibes and just over two minutes where you won’t be able to help foot tapping and head bopping.

The four piece crashed onto the scene in 2012 with their six song self titled EP, which they released in 2012 with Chapter Music. Riding on the success of The Stevens they released their first single of their new album, Hindsight before releasing their debut LP in November 2013, History of Hygiene, which has a whopping 24 tracks squeezed into 44 minutes, which that means songs are averaging around 2 minutes flat each, for those of us with supremely short attention spans it seems this album was made for you!

Chapter Music has said that The Stevens are “the most exciting new band [they’ve] come across in the last couple of years”, which based on how their album has been received is looking pretty damn accurate. The album has been received extremely well, selling out online and the band are currently touring throughout the US.
