Mac Miller – Ladders
This track is from Mac’s new album Swimming. He’s an artist who has resonated a lot with me recently because of the arc his life has followed. Ladders is an upbeat story of perseverance and redemption.
Cozz – Zendaya ft. J Cole
I love the haunting vocal sample in the J Cole-produced instrumental for this song. It lays a perfect foundation for the really emotional performances from Cozz and Cole. I feel as though somebody could rap about anything genuine on the beat and it would sound beautiful.
Saba – BUSY/SIRENS
As somebody who has dealt with mental illness, the references to some of his own experiences in this track are really inspiring. I personally try to shed light on what depression can be like as much I can in my own music, and I think Saba nails it here.
David Dallas – This Is It
D. Dot is the undisputed king in New Zealand where I spent a good portion of my youth, and one my idols. This one perfectly showcases his ultra-smooth story telling abilities and the spacey production is beautiful.
Isaiah Rashad – Stuck in the Mud ft. SZA
This song seems to move so slowly and gives off this feeling of calm stagnancy referenced in the hook. I could have picked from almost any of Rashad’s music to add to the playlist because his material is all so lyrically potent, but the mellow production here seemed to fit the rest.
REMI – My People
REMI is my favourite Australian hip-hip artist and I still listen to his 2016 album Divas and Demons on the regular. This song makes me want to dance in my kitchen, and I love the way it sounds as if they’ve tried to tap into some different cultural sounds in the production.
Illbaz, Melodownz and Raiza Biza – Sky High
This is another track out of Auckland, New Zealand and taps into the smoothness that David Dallas has helped establish in the scene there. Perfect track for feeling good on an afternoon drive. Even has a saxophone outro?!
Kwame – FREEWAY
I’m a huge fan of the chopped and screwed stuff that comes out of Houston and this song does a good job of channeling some of the same feeling. It’s a perfect, laid back last track for Kwame’s awesome EP, and he’s a dope artist receiving the recognition he deserves.
SiR – D’evils
Continuing with the driving vibes of the playlist, the line “life is so much better when you live in slow motion” encapsulated my love for this track. It’s truly a song that makes you cruise, or kick back and smoke. The gorgeous vocal chops in the beat add just enough weirdness to it to keep in interesting.
Travis Scott – YOSEMITE
I tried to resist including anything from Astroworld in this playlist because everybody already knows how good it is, but this song is a little softer than most of Travis’ stuff which I like. The production on any Travis Scott project is always flawless in my opinion and this is no different. This song makes for a nice end of night closer.
