Revelling in the excitement and naivety of youth is Canadian outfit For Jane. Their sounds, reminiscent of their idols Mitski, St Vincent and Arcade Fire, relish in wistful innocence; humorous, witty and structurally mature, For Jane’s debut EP Married With Dogs brands the outfit as one of the leading up-and-comers in the thriving Toronto music scene.
Married With Dogs, the debut EP of Canadian outfit For Jane, perfectly surmises the awkward and exciting delicacies of youth.
Forming in 2016, For Jane have spent years honing their sound by playing shows all over Toronto, having played sets at iconic venues such as The Horseshoe Tavern (known for staging acts such as Talking Heads, The Rolling Stones and The Ramones) and Lee’s Palace (at which Nirvana, Oasis and The Red Hot Chili Peppers have all held shows).
The band’s freshman EP Married With Dogs was released in November last year, and For Jane are using their post-EP release adrenaline to work on their forthcoming debut album.
Four musicians make up For Jane: there’s Natalie Panacci on vocals, Julia Wittmann vocals and guitar, Bradley Connor on the drums and Zachary Stuckey on bass. Julia and Natalie front the band, both having long histories playing and making music.
A longtime sing-songwriter, Julia’s sensibility for structure and lyricism complements seasoned jazz vocalist Natalie’s knack for melodies and harmonies. When combined with the beat of their rhythm section, the quartet perfectly captures the sounds of self-discovery, naive adolescence and the opening of doors into adulthood.
Married With Dogs was recorded at Traxahead, Natalie’s father’s studio, and was mixed by Carlin Nicholson of III Eagle Studios (and Canadian band Zeus). The EP perfectly surmises the delicacies of youth; the awkward fumblings, the innocent pleasures and the dissatisfaction associated with the idea that the grass is always greener.
