Jay-Z’s albums are now back on Spotify as of December 4th 2019, the date that marks Brooklyn-born hip-hop artist turning the big 5-0.
Classic albums like The Blueprint, The Black Album, and the rest of his fantastic discography were removed from Spotify in April 2017, a few months prior to the release of his thirteenth studio album 4:44.
Jay-Z’s albums have returned to Spotify after a two-year absence. Here’s to the lot of us who can’t afford more than one streaming subscription.
In that time, Jay-Z’s discography was exclusively available through Tidal, his high-definition streaming service that was promoted as being the first artist-owned streaming service – paying the highest percentage of royalties to artists and songwriters within the streaming market.
Two years into the life of Tidal, Jay-Z bought back the shares from other industry heavyweights like Rihanna, Calvin Harris, Kanye West, Jack White, and Daft Punk (to name a few). As a result he decided to remove his music from other streaming platforms in April 2017, making it exclusive to Tidal.
Earlier this year, he made the peculiar decision to make his Blueprint albums available on Apple Music. This week, his discography is now available on Apple Music and Spotify, a return that was celebrated by the former in way of a Twitter post (see below.)
