Out of this world: the trailer for the upcoming film adaptation of legendary science fiction novel Dune has finally dropped.
The long-awaited trailer for Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Dune, the legendary 1965 sci-fi novel by Frank Herbert, is finally here.
Soundtracked with a re-arrangement of Pink Floyd‘s Eclipse, the trailer offers an explosive cinematic glimpse at one of the greatest science fiction stories ever written.
Starring Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Oscar Isaac, Rebecca Ferguson, Stellan Skarsgård, Javier Bardem, and more, the film follows Paul Atreides (played by Chalamet) as he oversees the planet Arrakis, the universe’s only source of the precious melange. Alongside the trailer, the cast also appeared in an hour-long virtual panel hosted by Stephen Colbert.
“The story is so rich and complex that, in order to be faithful to the book, we’ll need to make at least two movies,” director Villeneuve (also the man behind Blade Runner 2049 and Arrival) described. “That was a deal right at the start.”
Elsewhere, he describes his decision to shoot the film on location: “I had to shoot the movie in the real desert. My argument was they didn’t shoot Jaws in a swimming pool.
“In order to bring Dune to the screen, I needed to be as close to nature as possible and make Dune as close to us as possible so when people see the movie, they will be amazed by the power of the landscape,” he continued.
“Most importantly, they will feel strangely at home because I think it’s important from a subconscious way to feel that this could be so real because what the movie is about is it’s about us and I want the audience to feel deep inside their soul what I was feeling as I was reading the book.”

It’s not the first time that the film has seen adaptations, with iconic director David Lynch attempting the feat back in 1984, followed by a television miniseries in 2000. However, it’s widely considered that neither has done the story justice.
The trailer also features an arrangement of Pink Floyd’s Eclipse, taken from their seminal 1973 album The Dark Side of the Moon, by legendary German film composer Hans Zimmer.

Elsewhere during the panel, Jason Momoa described the intensity of filming, reflecting on one scene in particular: “I’ve never run this much in my life. The sun was setting and so we had to get the shot. I had to run through this windstorm to Timothée, and I couldn’t see where I was going.
“I just didn’t want to fall on my face and I didn’t want to disappoint [Villeneuve]. But I’m not the best runner,” he continued, “and the amount of the chafing and the sweat that had built up, and I was like, I’m not gonna give up, I’m not gonna give up, but inside, I was crying like a little baby. There’s no way I want to be the black sheep in this thing, man.”
