Elon Musk wants to revive Vine: Here’s a look back at some of the app’s most memorable videos

Vine walked so TikTok could run, so we’re taking a look back at the platform’s best moments in anticipation of its potential revival.

A mere days after his acquisition of Twitter was made official, billionaire and so-called ‘Chief Twit’ Elon Musk has set his sights on reforming yet another social media platform. Taking to Twitter (which is essentially his living room at this point), Musk yesterday (October 31) floated the idea of reviving Vine, the six-second video platform which — while wildly popular in its heyday — was discontinued in 2016.

Since then, Vine has been royally usurped by fellow video platform TikTok, but that hasn’t stopped Musk — and legions of former six-second addicts — from relishing in the idea of Vine’s revival. At the time of writing, responses to Musk’s poll on Vine’s potential return are running about 2-1 in favour, amid separate reports that the CEO has tasked a team with rebooting Vine’s old code.

In anticipation of its (potential) return, we’re counting down some of the platform’s most memorable creators and videos, which reveal a rare moment of wisdom on Musk’s part: Vine walked so TikTok could run. See how the app seeped its way into the modern lexicon in the classic Vine videos below, and head here to learn more about Musk’s hostile Twitter takeover in October.

Fre-sh-ava-cado

This phonetically spaced Del Taco sign left millions of users in stitches (and rightfully hungry for some guacamole).

Roadwork Ahead?

Seemingly home to word puns, this entry is a callback to the simpler humour of the 2010’s, long before Dad jokes started getting a bad wrap.

Look at all those chickens

Before the rise of TikTok Mum-fluencers (internet speak for Mum’s who make videos) Vine paved the way with legions of children behaving adorably, and this little kid takes the cake.

Ok-eh

The two syllables heard ‘round the world.

Dropped my croissant

It’s surprising how frequently this man’s reaction to a nearly dropped croissant can be quoted on a daily basis.

Hurricane tortilla

Yet another food-related quote so niche you’d think it’d never be uttered again. But you’d be wrong (especially if you’re tortillas are acting a fool).

Merry Chrysler

Mispronounced words seem to be the throughline of Vine’s more successful videos, and Christine Sydelko nails the brief with this Christmas-themed classic.

A potato flew around my room

What do Vine users enjoy more than a pun? A pun that requires a fishing line and an old starchy vegetable, as well as some misheard Frank Ocean lyrics.

What’s 9 + 10?

Maths is hard, and this little guy reminded users the world over that poor addition skills don’t jeopardise Vine virality.

Oh my God, they were roommates

Eavesdropping is usually considered taboo, but this creator’s scandalous reaction to a passerby’s phone call will live on in Vine infamy *gasp!*.
