Where Now Girl sees Milk Bar Gang candidly explore the universal and female experience of violence.
Hailing from Melbourne, art rock duo Milk Bar Gang formed in 2021 writing and recording tracks on GarageBand from their living room during the pits of lockdown. These recording sessions resulted in their debut EP Open, a four-track EP released in June of this year that showcased the duo’s eclectic musical influences.
Following up from Open is their latest single Where Now Girl, which tells the tale of a young girl who has suffered through abuse, with the narrative taking perspective from her older self. Milk Bar Gang sprinkles traditional folk styling into the track, with rich melodic piano chords and swampy guitars, which allude to the shadow of a menacing male presence in the young girl’s life.
Accompanying the track is their self-produced music video, which follows the young girl through a world of black and white, with a lingering silhouette of a man looming over her.
Where Now Girl explores the universal and female experience of violence, a story that singer Bianca delivers in gentle and passionate tones, captivating your attention until the final note. With the sombre undertones that drive it, the track conveys the uneasy feeling that those who suffer from abuse.
Milk Bar Gang raises the importance of speaking out about abuse, and the long journey of finally escaping from the grips of those who keep them bound by intimidation and fear.
