A David Bowie biopic is coming and it details the origins of Ziggy Stardust

With the overwhelming Box Office success of recent biopics such as Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman, the season of biopics is set to continue. A first look at the upcoming David Bowie biopic, Stardust is here.

An image of actor Johnny Flynn (Lovesick) playing the pop culture icon has been released. Stardust is set to explore Bowie’s transition into his iconic alter ego, Ziggy Stardust. Jenna Malone (Donnie Darko) and Marc Maron (GLOW) will play Bowie’s first wife and Bowie’s publicist respectively. Gabriel Range will direct the film.

BowieAn image taken by Paul Van Carter has been released of Johnny Flynn playing David Bowie in the upcoming biopic, Stardust.

The upcoming biopic hasn’t come without its bit of controversy. Bowie’s son, Duncan Jones has slammed the upcoming project for not seeking the family’s blessing. “If you want to see a biopic without his music or the family’s blessing, that’s up to the audience,” he tweeted.

In response, the producers of the film have come out with a statement reiterating that the film is a story and not a biopic. They shared, “The film was written as an ‘origins story’ about the beginning of David’s journey as he invented his Ziggy Stardust character, and focuses on the character study of the artist, as opposed to a hits driven ‘music’ biopic.”

The upcoming biopic is one of the many announcements and releases this year that have sought to commemorate the late great artist. Recently, Mattel introduced an all new ‘Bowie Barbie‘ while a 50th anniversary music video of Space Oddity was also released this year.
