In what would have taken a mammoth amount of research, Alex Bartsch has sought out the obscure London locations behind a series of cover shoots for classic reggae records. The photos portray Bartsch’s fine eye for detail and patience while also creating a pseudo history book for London’s early reggae scene.
The portraits were selected by Bartsch himself, from his own record collection, and they were all released in the 20 year period between 1967 and 1987.
Can you name these classic reggae records? Thanks to a British photographer, you can now find out exactly where the covers were shot.
The full book of shots, seeing a release through One Love Books, contains an extra 35 photos on top of the seven you can see here. In most cases, the pictures actually show how little London has changed, given that the old covers blend so seamlessly into the modern shots.
