“Sorry started with the A chord arpeggios in the chorus – I played around with chords for a little while and ended up on the one I like most being A, F#m, C#m, D I coupled this with a funky bpm that the musos listening will notice.
Once I found those chords the chorus just happened; I wrote it in 2020, I was in year 12 at the time, I had just spent my 18th birthday in my bedroom, I had a lot of time through the year long lockdown to mull over a lot of my issues with body image so it really just all came out at once. It was the best feeling ever – I think almost every songwriter has experienced this – where you write something quite quickly and you’re happy with it right away and don’t feel the need to change it – the verses though not so much
I knew once I got that chorus down that it was something I wanted to put out, I think this subconsciously held me back at the time. I became less honest in my writing and that made it much harder to write the song because I started thinking about what listeners would hear and say rather than what I wanted to say. I’m so glad I got over this it made writing the verses a lot easier in the end. SOOO many different versions of the verses exist but I’m so happy with the ones I ended up with, I hope my listeners are too.
Main takeaway be unapologetically yourself when you write your lyrics and they will come with much more ease. I’m still working on this one myself.”
In a world where authenticity and self-expression are often undervalued, Aaliyah Bise’s “Sorry” is a refreshing reminder of the power of embracing one’s true self in songwriting. It’s a song that resonates on a deeply emotional level, leaving an indelible mark on the listener. With her fearless creativity and unwavering commitment to her own truth, Bise has crafted a timeless and impactful piece of music that is sure to captivate audiences for years to come.
