ARIAs launch new category to recognise ads for using Australian music

A new award category has been unveiled ahead of the 2022 ARIAs ceremony tonight, to “celebrate the best use of Australian music” in ads.

The ARIAs have announced a new, last-minute category dubbed Our Soundtrack Our Ads. According to a press release issued yesterday (November 23), this award is set to be offered in partnership with M&C Saatchi Sport & Entertainment, as well as the Our Soundtrack Our Stories initiative.

Led by Forster-hailing songwriter, Jack River, Our Soundtrack Our Stories aims to encourage the use of Australian music in television, radio and other media avenues. Launched in 2021, it follows a social media post made by River, urging businesses to play more Aussie tracks during Olympics coverage and elsewhere.

Commenting on the new award category, Jack River says, “our Soundtrack Our Ads is an exciting opportunity for brands, creatives and the music industry to unite with a common goal of championing local music and local storytelling.”

Elsewhere, ARIA CEO, Annabelle Herd, declares: “Advertising has such an important role in impacting change across society. It creates ideas and tells stories that leave an important mark on culture. Music is no different. I’m thrilled to celebrate talent and creativity across the two industries with this first-of-its-kind award in 2023.”

Tonight (November 24), the 2022 ARIA Awards will be holding their first in-person ceremony since 2019 at Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion on November 24. The ceremony will also be aired on Channel 9 and streamed via YouTube. Check out the full list of nominees here.
