Auckland duo LEXXA chat their new single Slow Fade Out

It’s been about a month now since we first heard slow fade out; the latest single from Auckland-based sister duo LEXXA. For pretty much that entire time, we haven’t stopped spinning it.

So we caught up with the band to chat about the new track, APRA AMCOS SongHubs workshop, and Valentine’s Day.

We caught up with Auckland-based duo LEXXA to chat about their new single slow fade out, Valentine’s Day, and what the future holds.

HAPPY: Hey, how’s it going? What are you up to at the moment?

LEXXA: Hey! It’s going so good! We have been super busy! Been in the studio a lot, writing heaps of songs, developing and excited to put more things out into the world. We have also been playing heaps this summer which is the most fun part.

HAPPY: We’re loving slow fade out! How does it feel having it out in the world?

LEXXA: Feels so so good! We are excited to show the world a more developed version of LEXXA and give everyone a taste of what’s to come!

HAPPY: Could you tell us a bit about the track?

LEXXA: Despite the name, slow fade out is an upbeat synthy jam with lyrics that contrast those happy sounding beats. It’s a song about the confusing place of being broken up after never really having been together.

HAPPY: Did you always intend to release it on Valentines Day? Or was that just the way things worked out?

LEXXA: We kind of wanted to release the song around that time and then we were just like “let’s release it on Valentines Day. It’ll be funny because it’s actually about a relationship ending.” It made the songs meaning even more extreme because of the juxtaposition of Valentines and the lyrics of the song and hopefully even more relatable to people who didn’t have valentines day plans haha.

HAPPY: This track was written at the APRA AMCOS SongHubs workshop, right? Could you tell us a bit about this? It sounds so awesome…

LEXXA: Yes! Maude went to the APRA AMCOS SongHubs Sphere which was an all female and non-binary identifying version of the SongHubs workshops. SongHubs is a collaborative song-writing initiative presented by APRA AMCOS so basically just a week of writing with other artists and producers. I think to everyone who attended it was a life-changing experience, it was the most supportive and amazing group and there were some pretty amazing songs written that week that hopefully, the world will get to hear one day. ‘slow fade out’ was written with Maude, Chelsea Jade, JessB and Nakita.

HAPPY: How do you view slow fade out as being different from past singles? If at all…

LEXXA: We kind of feel like even though we only have 2 other songs out, we are definitely getting a better understanding of what we want our sound to be and this is a big development for us, it’s definitely a little different to our previous songs and more of a taste of the direction we are taking things.

HAPPY: We’re picking up a lot of different sounds in your music… are there any particular artists you’re drawing influence from right now?

LEXXA: We have so many influences! We really like 80’s inspired music and some contemporary artists like  Robyn, Muna, Shura, Chvrches.

HAPPY: What’s next for LEXXA? Any other exciting plans in the works?

LEXXA: We are slowly working on a bigger project. We have so many songs in the works that we can’t wait to share with everyone!

HAPPY: Cheers for the chat!
