Avant garde or complete piss-take? Watch Cloud Nothings butcher a Coldplay song

Cloud Nothings recently performed a cover of Coldplay’s hit Clocks for the A.V. Club’s “Undercover” video series, where bands perform songs from a list curated by the publication. Actually, ‘cover’ is a bit of a stretch; ‘reimagining’ is probably a little closer to home.

Cloud Nothings coldplay

Watch Cloud Nothings butcher a Coldplay song with animal noises, discordant synths, jarring rhythms and a shit load of smoke.

“When we put Coldplay’s “Clocks” on this year’s Undercover list,” the A.V. Club wrote alongside to the video, “we figured we’d get some pretty, emotive cover of the British group’s megahit. What we got, instead, was Cloud Nothings’ version of a sonic art project.

As you’ll see in the clip, the group weaves together the actual melody of “Clocks” with animal sounds, deep fuzz, copious amounts of smoke, and a lot of dissonance for its version of the cut. We’re not sure if it’s a cover, per se, but it’s intriguing to watch all the same.”

How they managed to do this with a straight face, we’ll never know.
