Pop princess Charli XCX has been tapped for Britney Spears’ first album in almost a decade, according to reports
In what will mark her first album in eight years, Britney Spears is reportedly working on a new music project — with songwriting assists from Charli XCX.
According to reports from The Sun, Charli is one of multiple writers tapped to pen songs for the Spears album, which is reportedly set for release sometime in 2024.
Despite having not met her, Charli was previously enlisted as a songwriter for Spears’ 2013 album Britney Jean, though none of her songs made the official tracklist.
“The Britney album is being kept top secret,” a source told The Sun of the project — her first since 2016’s Glory and tenth overall. “Work has been going behind the scenes for quite a while to gather a series of killer songs to bring Britney back with a bang.”
The source claims that Charli began work on the album in 2023, and wrote one song which is expected to make the final cut ahead of the album’s release this year.
“Charli has a great track record when it comes to writing clever pop songs,” the source added. The Fancy hitmaker reportedly joined Spears’ songwriting team alongside Julia Michaels, who has penned songs for Selena Gomez, Nick Jonas and Yungblud.
Alongside launching her own prolific solo music career, Charli has written for fellow singers Troye Sivan and Gwen Stefani, among many others.
For her part, Spears went on a years-long hiatus from music amid her famous conservatorship battle with her father Jamie, who was suspended from his conservator role in 2021.
Since then, Spears has featured on two songs, appearing on Elton John’s Hold Me Closer remix in 2022 as well as Mind Your Business alongside will.i.am.
Last year, Spears detailed in her best-selling memoir The Woman In Me that her “musical career is not my focus at the moment,” though reports of a Charli collaboration suggest otherwise.
