PREMIERE: Ebolagoldfish revel in excess on new single ‘No Fear No Fun’

Sydney trio Ebolagoldfish dive deep into hedonism on No Fear No Fun, the new single premiering today on Happy Mag

Ebolagoldfish have proved that risk comes with reward on No Fear No Fun, the Sydney trio’s latest single ahead of their forthcoming album.

Perhaps fittingly given the high-energy that brims in every moment of the track, the opening lyrics, sung with a rustic gravel, urge listeners to “get this party started,” and it’s pretty much an exercise in rock revelry from that point on.

While the propulsive percussion drives much of No Fear No Fun — accentuated by lead singer Gavan McDougall’s punchy, Brendon Urie-like delivery — there are more subtle instrumental flares to be enjoyed, too.

Strident guitars adorn every corner, ranging from sunlit fuzz to all-out screech. Later, rattling effects add extra texture to the production, allowing the track to flit between classic rock and something altogether more groovy.

Ebolagoldfish coalesce their sound — which at times recalls the sonic euphoria of Livin’ La Vida Loca with its earworm hooks and surf-rock riffs — around McDougall’s energetic performance.

Here, the singer delivers lines with an infectious, no holds barred attitude, accompanied in some moments by the subtle chant of a backing choir.

It’s the kind of energy that seems purpose-built for a sing-along, either in a heaving moshpit or on an evening commute home. That carefree approach becomes all the more riotous upon a closer listen to No Fear No Fun’s lyrics.

Where some rock acts might lament the debaucherous, party lifestyle with a sense of sombreness, Ebolagoldfish instead choose to revel in it; triumphantly declaring that they simply “want it all.”

There’s mentions of lines, pills, and the rising sun after a sleepless night, before McDougall sings of the “damage [being] done” with a sense of accomplishment.

Speaking of the vicarious thrill of the track in a press statement, McDougall said “No Fear No Fun is all about excess; using and abusing.”

This energy is only heightened by the single’s official music video, which was directed by Dorrie Lubman and follows a character (portrayed by Noah Scape) as he crashes multiple parties and inevitably descends to rock bottom.

No Fear No Fun comes ahead of Ebolagoldfish’s new album Bad Choices, Good Times, which is set for release this summer and has spawned fellow single Powers. In the meantime, get caught up with the trio with their new single No Fear No Fun below.
