Nostalgia is ripe in the gaming world at the moment. Last year Nintendo released a miniature version of their original 1985 NES console – a bold move that absolutely paid off, with over 1.5 million units being sold worldwide.
However, last week, the hugely popular ‘NES Classic’ was discontinued, with Nintendo claiming the console “wasn’t intended to be an ongoing, long-term product,” much to the dismay of fans.
But the news comes with a ray of hope for nostalgic gamers – rumour has it that Nintendo is planning a Super Nintendo reissue instead. Fuck yeah.
Bummed about Nintendo pulling the NES Classic? Well, rumour has it they’re planning to release a mini Super Nintendo later this year.
According to Eurogamer – whose sources correctly leaked information about Nintendo’s Switch console prior to its reveal – claims that the SNES Classic Edition (or SNES Mini in Europe) will be released in time for Christmas, and that development is well underway.
There’s no information on what games the mini console could include. As a reminder there are heaps of classics to choose from, including Super Mario World, Super Mario Kart, Donkey Kong Country and StarFox.
It is also unsure whether it aims to correct some of the glaring problems with NES Classic, such as its unit shortages, and its ridiculously short controller cable.
