Freud and The Suicidal Vampires

Have you ever been drinking the blood of an unsuspecting virgin under the shadow of a full moon and wondered to yourself, what would be a fitting soundtrack for these most humble of exploits?

Yes?

Well have I got news for you.

Freud and the Suicidal Vampires

Exploding out of Sydney comes Freud and The Suicidal Vampires. Comprised solely of Callum Newton, this band takes lo-fi to a new level. Sounding like Violent Soho on crack with an obvious Sonic Youth influence, their recordings sound like they were made with a tin can and a piece of foil (in the best way possible). Walker utilises filthy distorted guitars, his surf style vocals and (usually) simplistic drums to create surf-rocky grunge with hints of melancholy that quite frankly just makes you want to boogie. Their debut album She Doesn’t Want You Here When She Gets Back Because You’ve Been Ruining Everybody’s Lives and Eating All Our Steak displays the band’s tongue in cheek attitude. Listening through the album provides quite a ride and generally just a jolly good time. It’s fast, catchy and shies away from the poppier styled surf rock of fellow Aussies Dune Rats or America’s Wavves by keeping it (INCREDIBLY) lo-fi. These choruses are more for dancing to than singing along with.

Although there is currently only one member I’m hoping that 2014 will be a year in which these guys hit the live circuit and get some people sweaty as hell. Until then, head to their Bandcamp and give them a well deserved listen… and maybe even a couple of dollars if you’re feeling generous.

BANDCAMP (cannot for the life of me find any other trace of this band. Maybe Buffy killed them in one of her sassy outfits)
