Gang of Youths @ Newtown Social Club

Hopping from the US to the UK and now back to the east coast of Australia, Sydney born pop musicians Gang of Youths are returning to their home soil for a string of headline shows this May. If you didn’t catch them in support slot on The Jezabels’ The Brink tour, then this is your chance to experience the unique energy of GOY before they jet back off to somewhere more interesting.

Gang Of Youths

Gang of Youths epic six point three minute track is pretty good. See them at the Newtown Social Club TONIGHT for a mere 15 bucks.

Quickly signing to Sony BMGthe band’s sound found it’s way onto the international radar with the entirely polished Evangelists, a song that has a bit of an undefinable listenability, if hindered by it’s pop format. It’s a song that simply sounded good. Last week, they premiered Poison Drum – a six and a half minute ballad, proportionately more interesting than their first offering, with instrumental complexity and features a crescendo that manages to plant a flag at the peak of the song, rather than flipping over backwards and rolling back down to base camp on Evangelists.

Tonight’s show will be a launch for Poison Drum, held at the Newtown Social Club, the venue formerly known as The Sandringham Hotel. Sisters to the Northcote Social Club down in Melbourne, the venue is another part of a strange mix of the gentrification-meets-long-standing-arts-community vibe in the inner-west – it’s a pretty slick venue with friendly door staff, reasonable prices and supports live music, and instead of nurturing local scenes, you’ll find people from all over Sydney (and beyond) both frequenting and performing at the new Newtown Social Club.

Tickets are selling fast via the Social Club website, and at thirteen bucks a pop, they won’t be around for long. If there are any left, they’ll be 15 on the door, which swing open at 8:00 – bands start at 8:00. You can check them out in Melbourne as well tomorrow at the Shebeen Band Room – tix via their website.
