If you haven’t already immersed yourself in Already Gone, the new single from Henning, stop what you’re doing and go listen to the track now. The song is a sprawling slice of pop brilliance, and we’ve had it spinning on repeat ever since we first heard it.
So, fresh off the track’s release we caught up with the artist herself to chat all about it, musical influences, and what the future holds.
With an amazing new single fresh under her belt, we caught up with Sydney-based artist Henning to chat all about it.
HAPPY: Hey, how’s it going? What are you up to at the moment?
HENNING: Yeah really hectic time of year but I like to keep busy. Been busy songwriting so my mind is always full! I was away a few weeks ago filming a music video with Nadisko (a duo who I am writing two songs with).
HAPPY: We’ve been loving Already Gone! How does it feel having the track out there in the world?
HENNING: Thank you! It was less daunting the second time around but I am overwhelmed with the lovely messages and support I have been receiving.
HAPPY: Could you tell us a bit about the song?
HENNING: So I wrote the song back in 2018 but when Nat Sherwood (my producer) and I went to record it in the studio we had one version that ended up being completely different and hence, what it is now. You would not recognise it at all. That’s the beauty of writing with someone else, it opens up so many more alleys for the song to venture to.
HAPPY: How did you approach this track differently to With You? If at all…
HENNING: It was a different process; originally the chorus pre-chorus was the first verse and then N.S was like how about we do this and then we looked at each other and just did that silent nod of agreement. We were pretty excited!
HAPPY: The video is amazing too! Could you walk us through how this came together? Who was involved?
HENNING: Yeah well the video was filmed over two days and two different locations; at my apartment and Maroubra beach. Hristijan Konesky my videographer was absolutely incredible! He is so knowledgeable and was directing me throughout the process. He was like “And look away from the camera nnnnnnn… now! More emotion, more emotion.” Haha, he was really good to work with.
HAPPY: Were there any particular artists you were listening to when you wrote/recorded the track?
HENNING: I am really into Billie Eilish and Lorde so I would say they are huge influencers of my sound. But! The first version of the song was more Ocean Eyes-esque but the version it is now, ummm, I don’t know. You tell me haha!
HAPPY: Are there any other artists you’re loving right now?
HENNING: Yeah so I listen to Bon Iver on repeat, his voice and everything heals me. But I love listening to new up and coming artists.
HAPPY: What’s next for Henning? Any other exciting plans in the works?
HENNING: I have a lot on my plate atm. Like I mentioned earlier, I’ve just recorded a song and music video with Nadisko and another song which we haven’t recorded yet. I have two more songs I want to release in the next few months that are mastered and ready to go! I’m really excited to get them out to the Henning fans.
