From the vibrant and cultured cosmopolitan city of Glasgow comes the female, guitar and drum playing, indie rock duo Honeyblood. While EDM and dubstep-influenced bangers permeate our radio waves, the Honeyblood girls are bringing back guitar-centric garage rock that echoes the classic sounds of The Breeders, PJ Harvey and The Throwing Muses.
Displaying a disarming blend of gauzy, lo-fi charm and scuzzy rock and roll, Glasgow’s best-kept secret has bubbled under the radar with a quiet subtlety that’s soon to blow up in the indie scene.
Honeyblood is a delicious combination of alternative garage rock and pop – once you’ve had a taste of it, there’s no going back.
Contrary to what their name suggests, rather than an unsavory concoction of flowing crimson fluid and sticky, golden liquid, Honeyblood is a delectable combination of alternative garage rock and noise pop. Forming in early 2012 with Stina Marie Claire Tweeddale on guitar and vocals and Shona McVicar on drums, the two drew on 90s-influenced indie rock and surfer girl pop to form their self-proclaimed ‘crunch pop’.
Quickly growing a loyal following and going on to open shows for the likes of Palma Violets, Sleigh Bells and Deap Vally, and even performing at bigger festivals (The Great Escape and T in The Park), it was Honeyblood’s debut two-track demo cassette Thrift Shop (it seems like thrift shops guarantee success) that started it all. It caught the attention of FatCat Records, who signed Honeyblood in 2013 and the rest is history.
The Glaswegians girls are clearly on the up and up, having just released their debut self-titled album last month. Honeyblood is a raw, honest and raucous, intentionally lo-fi production of songs that reverberates with copious amounts of effortless charm and rambunctious misbehaviour.
An irresistibly frantic pop-punk showcase of punk-driven guitar and high-speed hooks, Killer Bangs conveys both urgency and restraint with an immediate sense of ferocious abandon. From the sullen slow-burn of (I’d Rather Be) Anywhere but Here to debut single Bud’s steady and cheerful, happy-go-lucky vibes, Honeyblood demonstrates a versatility and brilliance that will win you over before its forty minutes are up.
Swallow up some delicious Honeyblood. It’s not as gross as it sounds. Their debut album Honeyblood is out now via Brighton’s FatCat Records.
