How a life or death experience brought Rick Webster’s new EP into the world

Rick Webster is a musician dedicated to his craft, having released three spellbinding albums to date. His compositions are moving, classy and far-reaching, weaving together threads of jazz, soul, and guitar-led rock.

On Friday he releases his new EP Long Story Short, a collection of songs written as Webster’s life passed through its darkest moments.

Open your ears to Rick Webster’s We’ll Never Be Them, the essential second taste of his upcoming Long Story Short EP.

In 2015, Webster’s life was placed in the balance after a near-fatal car crash. Unsure if he would ever be able to play music again, he battled through this time with pen and paper, writing what would eventually become his Long Story Short EP.

In 2019 the fruits of that recovery are finally coming to light, with two singles hitting the airwaves in the last two months. Lost In Lucerne and We’ll Never Be Them both feature the stunning vocal talents of Sophie Foster, a soul singer based in Webster’s native Perth.

The new songs bear a slightly rockier and more rhythmic flavour to Webster’s previous compositions, dynamic guitar chords and sharp percussion punctuating both tracks, giving each a powerfully driven tone.

Rick Webster’s career is one that makes leaps and bounds with every new release, and from what we can see, Long Story Short will mark no exception. The character of his songwriting has never been so measured and profound – you can bet we’re all ears for the rest of the EP this Friday.

Long Story Short is out May 10.

Rick Webster and Sophie Foster will be launching Long Story Short on May 22nd at the Ellington Jazz Club in Perth. Grab your tickets here.
