It has been 50 years to the day since David Bowie’s iconic hit, Space Oddity was released. Being his first single to chart in the UK, Space Oddity was a stepping stone for Bowie, his showmanship and his distinct artistry. Today, even Barbie are jumping on board.
Eventually, Bowie would create and embody renowned alter ego Ziggy Stardust, a character that represented his androgynous persona and a passion for freedom of expression.
Mattel are releasing a unique Barbie to honour David Bowie and the 50th anniversary of his 1969 smash hit, Space Oddity.
Fans of Bowie can now buy a limited addition Barbie doll inspired by Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust character, offering a freakishly similar resemblance to Bowie and remaining true to his unique fashion sense. At $50, we’ll leave you to make the decision of whether this is a bargain or not. But whatever your views are on Mattel are, a ‘Bowie Barbie’ is objectively a cool concept.
Not to mention the collab makes sense. A Bob Dylan likeness we don’t see working, but Bowie? Hell yeah. And hopefully, this will also have a positive impact on how people perceive gender and what Barbie represents. As for how well this will sell? I guess we’ll wait and see.
