Two things learnt this week: Gung Ho means enthusiastic as well as dedicated and is also the name of a ripper of a band from Brisbane. Who are also enthusiastic and presumably, dedicated. A trio of boys, they produce indie pop deliciousness who cite Talking Heads, The Clash and Gang of Four as influences. They had me at Talking Heads because anyone who knows me, knows that I wish David Byrne was my dad (not weird at all). Listening to them makes me think of my yoof and fun things. Like eating fairy floss, rolling down a hill and having a big disposable income. It is light and sweet guitar riffs, fused with nonchalant vocals. Good combo. And the boys wear some pretty excellent glasseth.
Gung Ho are no strangers to the music scene and have a loyal fan base who think they are pretty amazing. And not just because they have a slight obsession with Seinfeld. Last year saw the release of EP Anywhere Else, a record containing perfectly produced indie pop. At times it’s feverish, oddball and sunny, while at other times it’s more clean and crisp musically, with an apathy drenched vocal and an slight whiff of electronic. It’s slick. Fully slick. Strangers is a real highlight on the EP. The video clip features a homage to the Chinese origins of their namesake and a break and enter by a dude with crazy, crazy eyes.
Their Facebook promises new material this year and it better be a promise they keep!
