Leure is Ash Hendriks, hailing from Perth, who you may or may not know from indie/folk band Wolves at the Door. But expect less of a folky sound here, as she’s been dabbling in the deep, dark world of electronic music for this solo project. Her vocals are breathy and trail off in parts, blending into the tracks to give them fluidity. The fragility reminds me a little of Lykke Li, the vocals sound a little bit like Grimes, but overall, this is darker than Lykke Li’s stuff, and far less busy and more ambient than Grimes’. There’s a balance between the mellow parts, and simple bursts of synth allow the atmosphere to build.
It’s been a really organic transition for her, and the foundations of what has become a serene and haunting album were created in just a matter of weeks – Ash Hendriks – I take my hat off to you, you hard working lady. Holland Sky, Leure’s album debut, was released Aug 2012. So many female “electronic” artists are just auto-tuned hussies, but Leure is the real deal. Have a gander.
