Introducing Salad Boys

Well well well New Zealand. It would seem as though you have been hiding some musical gems from me. Cut that out! My latest kiwi crush is man-trio Salad Boys, who hail from Christchurch. They play a healthy, nutritionally balanced mixture of psychedelic/indie rock, with a touch of (sugar free) pop hooks.

Their self-titled 9 track album is one that I quite easily indulged in from start to finish – several times. Special mentions go out to Dream Date and the four minute instrumental opening track Eighteen Forty Four. It feels like you’re listening on a warm, lazy afternoon. Say, at 4:20pm.

They released this in early 2013 on –wait for it – limited edition cassette tapes. That should keep the hipsters happy! A specialty from Salad Boys’ front man Joe Sampson’s independent label Melted Ice Cream. These guys have just finished a New Zealand national tour but apparently have plans to head to Australia in the near future.

If you have a spare hour up your sleeve, this tour doco (featuring Salad Boys and Christian Rock) shows some insight into the NZ tour life, as well as released and unreleased music from both bands.
