Not all that long ago, Cynthia Nabozny was a teenager growing up in Michigan, just outside of Detroit, scribbling sketches of songs in a notebook in her midwestern suburban home.
It’s a scene that feels pretty far removed from her current situation. Now performing under the stage name CYN, Nabozny finds herself living out a popstar fantasy most can only dream of.
“Heartbreak, questionable decisions, contemplation, and love again“: If US dream-pop hero CYN isn’t already on your radar, it’s time to reconsider things.
Having been signed to Katy Perry’s own alternative pop label Unsub, CYN (a tongue-in-cheek play on the word ‘sin’) drips out a seductive and deeply addictive blend of pop, R&B, and jazz.
It’s shimmering and infectious – no matter where your inclinations lie, CYN’s music will nest itself nicely under your skin.
“My upcoming project is simply an honest account of a twenty something year old: heartbreak, questionable decisions, contemplation, and love again,” the artist says of her music.
It’s been a whirlwind couple of years for Nabozny. With a resume that includes raking in millions of Spotify streams and playing sets at some of the world’s biggest stadiums, the pace at which her career has ascended could easily feel overwhelming.
“The dust is definitely settling but as things continue to grow and I’m playing big stages (like the one at Bonnaroo), I often jump up and down in my room and thank the universe like ‘yes girl, you’re really doing this.'”
While it’s easy to credit CYN’s success to a chance encounter with Katy Perry, there are few pop artists currently making the rounds who produce music with the endearing authenticity she’s capable of.
Her tunes are shiny and polished, yes. But there’s a humanity in CYN’s music that’s absent from the majority of present commercial pop music.
“I truly feel so lucky, but at the same time, I know I created this opportunity for myself.”
With a string of consistently strong singles behind her, CYN’s most recent release Believer is a perfect showcase of her penchant for crafting sultry, glittery, and infectious pop tracks.
“The story behind Believer is simple: heartbreak and let down. The story is shrouded behind an upbeat track, but if you listen to the lyrics, you can hear some real disappointment in them.”
With this contrast between juxtaposing ideas, CYN creates an interesting dynamic that’s sure to win you over. If you haven’t already joined this party, don’t hold out any longer. Stop kidding yourself and get in on the fun.
For Aussies holding out to see CYN live, you hopefully won’t have to wait much longer. When asked if she has plans to tour down under any time soon, CYN replied: “I have plans to tour the world when the time is right, so yes!”
Do yourself a favour and listen to CYN’s material above, and keep your eyes peeled for a future Australian tour.
