The DC Studios boss shuts down speculation that Matt Reeves is secretly filming two Batman sequels back-to-back.
Fans hoping Matt Reeves’ Batman saga was secretly preparing a double feature will have to wait.
James Gunn has officially ruled out one of the biggest rumours surrounding the franchise.
The DC Studios co-chief was asked on Threads whether Reeves was filming The Batman Part II and The Batman 3 back-to-back. A theory that had spread widely online as fans tried to explain the lengthy wait between films.
Gunn’s response was brief and definitive: “I can deny.”
The rumour gained traction because Hollywood has a long history of shooting sequels as one large production.
Films including The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest and At World’s End, and Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame all used back-to-back filming strategies to streamline production.
However, Gunn confirmed Reeves is not taking that approach with the next chapter of Robert Pattinson’s Batman story.
The Batman Part II is currently in production in London after Warner Bros. delayed the film’s release.
Originally scheduled for October 2026, the sequel will now arrive in cinemas on February 18, 2028. Almost six years after the first film debuted in March 2022.
Reeves is returning to direct and co-write the screenplay alongside Mattson Tomlin, while Pattinson will reprise his role as Bruce Wayne.
Warner Bros. has said the additional time will allow Reeves to complete the film’s extensive post-production process. Plot details are still being kept tightly guarded.
While fans may have hoped the delay meant Reeves was quietly building two films at once, Gunn’s confirmation suggests audiences will only get one return to Gotham for now.
Too bad they’ll have to wait until 2028 to see it.
