Joni Mitchell performed a full set for the first time in 20 years

Joni Mitchell shocked fans when she joined Brandi Carlile on stage at the Newport Folk Festival on Sunday.

It’s not every day you get the chance to see Joni Mitchell play live so maybe festival punters should buy a lotto ticket after witnessing the surprise performance.

The iconic singer graced the stage of the annual festival for a set with Brandi Carlile singing A Case of You, Carey and the timeless classic Summertime.

The 78-year-old hasn’t made many appearances since she suffered a brain aneurysm in 2015 and required rehabilitation and physical therapy. Singer David Crosby said in 2018 that Joni had to learn how to walk again.

Alas, this last year we’ve been lucky enough to spot the folk songstress a couple of times, earlier this year when she introduced Brandi Carlile at the Grammy awards and now again over the weekend.

After the stunning performance, Joni told CBS “I wanted to be good, and I wasn’t sure that I could be,”

“But I didn’t sound too bad tonight.

Fans of the singer-songwriter won’t be surprised by her humility but you can know for sure, that she absolutely smashed it.

Although it’s only really been the past seven years that Joni has stayed out of the spotlight, she actually hadn’t given a full live performance since 2002.

Now she’s back at it like the rock and roll queen she was born to be.

Along with singing a full 13-song set that of course included Big Yellow Taxi, Joni also performed the guitar solo from Just Like This Train.

Is anyone else crossing their fingers for a cheeky Joni Mitchell world tour?!
