By now you know King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard for so much more than their amazing name. After a punk-sized reception for their debut 12 Bar Bruise, garnering a cult following for their spaghetti western epic Eyes Like The Sky, solidifying their psychedelic reputation with Float Along – Fill Your Lungs, the Victorian supergroup have no intention of taking their foot off the pedal. In support of Oddments, King Gizz announced a huge interstate tour, which kicked off officially down in Melbourne this week.
If you haven’t heard Oddments yet, you might be surprised at the direction of their fourth installment. Notably floaty and modulated, the album is a long way from the post-Eddy Current scene that the band were birthed into, but the evolution of the sound present on Oddments is easy to see. If you found yourself nodding your head to their malty, salty single Vegemite, then you’ll certainly find yourself in a similar head nodding mood listening to the rest of the (surprisingly brief) album. If you found yourself nodding off, however, you might not be in for a good time…
Regardless of your opinion on whether this album lives up to the epic full band string smashing on hits like Pop In My Step, God Is Calling Me Back Home or Head On/Pill, all these tunes plus more should be present on the King Gizzard live extravaganza. When you get down to it, there’s no excuse not to get down to this one – check out Poncho TV’s video of Head On/Pill performed live.
These guys have a tendency to sell things out – t-shirts and vinyl releases on their bandcamp and in stores generally sell out within days. Tickets are still available for tomorrow’s (29th March) show at the Toff in Town, but get in quickly, as all other Melbourne shows well and truly sold out. Dates for the rest of the tour are below:
