From Face-Melting to Relevatory: Loopole’s Fav Gig’s Of All Time

Loopole share their fav gigs of all time, the ones that shape you, make you, inspire, and cement your passion for music for time eternal.

Fresh off the release of their new single ‘Candles‘ and after weathering the wild storms of 2020 and 2021, Loopole is back with a bang.

Proving they’re a force to be reckoned with. With new guitarist Finn onboard, members Nick, Seb, Khyl, and Finn (yes, there are two Finns!) have found their groove, and it’s evident in their  recent gig gathering.

But that’s not all – in an exclusive chat with Loopole, they spill the beans on their all-time favourite gigs that define their passion for music.

From The Murlocs’ fiery set at Freo Social, to The Smashing Pumpkins’ face-melting performance supported by Jane’s Addiction and Amyl and the Sniffers, these gigs left them with unforgettable memories.

Khyl’s sun-soaked experience with Methyl Ethel at Laneway and Seb’s mind-bending encounter with King Gizz’s dual-drummer spectacle will leave you yearning for those electrifying live shows.

Not to forget Nick’s revelation about Royel Otis’s electrifying set at Groovin – a gig he wishes he could relive over and over.

So, if you’re craving the pulse-pounding rush of post-punk goodness, Loopole’s got you covered with ‘Candles.’ And hey, why not relive their favourite gig moments while you’re at it?

Loopole’s Favourite Gig’s

Finn M: For me it was The Murlocs at the Freo Social in April. It was the culminative night of a 2-month road trip to WA with a mate, and the band played a blistering hour and a half set. The whole band was on fire, especially Ambrose whose vocals were amazing to experience live. Definitely one of my favourite Australian bands at the moment, bringing back classic guitar driven rock without being overly derivative, and adding a bit of a country-western twang.

Some honourable mentions include Fontaines DC at Laneway earlier this year, and Kurt Vile last November. Was very lucky to see Kurt and Courtney Barnett play ‘Over Everything’ together from their collaboration album, as I believe this may have been one of the only times they have played together live.

Finn W: Would have to be seeing The Smashing Pumpkins supported by Jane’s Addiction and Amyl and the Sniffers at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre. What a three piece of energy that was!

Jane’s Addiction and the Pumpkins showed me what a real rock n roll concert was, not missing a beat and melting faces as if they were in their prime of the 90s.

Seeing young and old fans going hard together in the mosh made the experience even better. Was awesome to see my Dad and Uncle in the thick of it, covered in beer and sweat as if they were in their 20s!’

Khyl:  Theres been a lot of memorable gigs/festivals I’ve attended but the one that sticks out to me is Methyl Ethel at Laneway in 2019. Perfect sunny day, and they played at sunset. I was freshly 18, and had just gotten out of a high school relationship.

Many beers were flowing through the system, but their set is still embedded in my brain to this day. Not a band that I listen to much but that set made me appreciate their music a whole lot more. ‘Real Tight’ was a stand out song.

Seb: Another Laneway set from me, this one being King Gizz in 2020 on the cusp of Covid. It was back when Eric (second drummer) was still in the band, and I remember being absolutely hypnotised by two drummers playing in perfect synchronisation.

This was just after they had released ‘Infest the Rats Nest’ so the setlist was heavy and the pit was too. The visuals playing behind the band were pretty mind bending and made for a bit of an out of body experience overall.

Nick: Royel Otis set at Groovin this year is a standout for me. I had just recently started listening to them, and this set cemented me as a fan. They played every song you would want to hear, and sounded exactly like the recordings while still having that extra magic that you get from a live performance.

The energy in the crowd was pretty electric, especially when they played ‘Kool Aid’. One of those gigs I wish I could relive.
