Having kicked around the local scene for around two years now, Brisbane rockers Lost Worlds have hit 2018 hard by dropping their debut album Fire Fire. And damn, it burns hot.
The group breed a dastardly kind of no-holds-barred rock ‘n’ roll, taking equal influence from heroes of the garage movement and their favourite video games. The result is as high-energy as it sounds.
Fire Fire sees Lost Worlds dive headfirst into the deep end. With a rampant energy both live and on record, this isn’t an act you’ll be wanting to miss.
Lead single What You Say opens the record like a crack of thunder, its anthemic choruses and guitar squeals letting you know exactly the kind of show you’re in for. I Wonder What follows, and things don’t slow up from there.
Keeping the vibe as relentless as Lost Worlds do is a tough ask for any band, especially a three piece. Given Fire Fire was recorded, produced, and mixed in lead singer Lee McRae’s bedroom, we reckon he’s well deserving of a pat on the back.
The video game influence threads its way through the album start to finish, appearing in the form of laser beams, 8-bit bleeps, and other familiar SFX. Yet beyond this, Fire Fire is driven by the same hyper-energetic pacing you’d expect to find in a video game soundtrack.
As such, you could easily picture yourself racing through a pixellated racetrack or trading blows with a final boss while listening through Fire Fire. It makes the end of the album ring out with a sense of achievement – that first deep breath after an extended period of euphoric stress.
Lost World’s debut album is an achievement in its dynamism, and its ability to straddle an unconventional set of influences. We’ll be keeping an ear to the floor for whatever else they have in store.
Right now the band don’t have any live dates on the calendar, so jump over to their Facebook page to stay in the know. Until then, listen to Fire Fire above.
