Drake, James Blake, Sampha and Banks – probably the coolest group of artists to remix ever. I like your taste Loston. The Perth-based producer, also known as Scott Mellor, is Australia’s latest talent to grace the electronic music scene, following in the steps of Flume, Hayden James and fellow Perth beatmaker Ta-ku.
Despite having only hit the scene in September last year, Loston has been earning mad props for his reworks of downtempo r&b tunes, rearranging them into bass-heavy electronic wonders. One of his first releases – a remix of James Blake’s Retrograde – illustrates his truly impressive abilities. The skilful layering and momentous escalation of synths is stupendous, drawing you in, and then when you least expect it, the song drops into a stunning synth harmony. This juxtaposition between contrasting song tempos and textures demonstrates an innovation and originality that is a rare find in electronic music these days.
What began as a mere bedroom project last May has since grown to widespread international recognition. Loston’s Sampha remix, with over 111,000 plays and counting on Soundcloud, has earned a spot on UKF Music Podcast #46 and been featured on French Radio show This Is Music. A quietly sophisticated intro bursts into high intensity synths, while the reverb transforms Sampha’s haunting vocals into a choppy, repitched hook.
Loston has just dropped his long awaited rework of Banks’ Waiting Game, a chilling track that strikes a perfect balance between future garage and soul. The young producer builds a new soundscape around the LA songstress’s gorgeous vocals, as the track descents into an ocean of smooth synths in Loston’s signature style.
With more originals, edits and reworks on the horizon and an upcoming live set expected in April, it looks like 2014 will be a busy year for Loston. Can’t wait to hear a Loston original?
