Masaya drops a music video for their compelling track ‘Black Sheep’

Masaya have released a music video for their heartwarming track Black Sheep, lifted from their debut album, Chronicles of Youth.

Hailing from Raglan, New Zealand is Indie Groove band, Masaya (pronounced muh-sai-uh), who formed in 2019 when lead singer, Reiki Ruawai needed to form a band for his University assignment. Reiki coaxed his sister Kaea to jump the drums, and his friend Muroki to play bass.

This three-piece lineup quickly grew, as keyboardist Joe and lead guitarist Jules joined, as well as new bassist Nat who joined the band when Muroki left to start his solo career. In 2019, the band released their debut single Tales of the Moonshine, and from that point on, they captured the hearts of anyone who stumbled upon their music, racking up 84,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, as well as reaching 2,700,00 streams on the platform.

With the release of their debut album, Chronicles of Youth this year, the band has propelled themselves further towards stardom, and have shown ambition towards creating their own unique sound, by fusing together elements of indie/roots/soul/groove as they aim to capture their hometown surf vibes. Their debut album track, Black Sheep has proven to be a highlight. It is accompanied by a groovy video that showcases the band playing in a 1930’s jazz bar, crafting a vintage-inspired atmosphere that transports you back in time.

Black Sheep is a calm groove track with warm and expressive vocals that captivate your attention. With a punchy bass line and crisp melodic textures, Black Sheep sees Masaya taking a dip into the feelings of isolation and uncertainty that we all experienced over the past two years. With lyrics that aim to provide an optimistic view and settle our nerves on the global confusion and panic, you will be hooked on the feel-good groovy vibes that Black Sheep provide.

Masaya is set to be the next groove merchants in the industry, with their lush vocals and warm instrumentation that will make you feel all fuzzy inside. If you want to be able to experience these vibes live, then you’re in luck as the band is currently on tour across Australia with Katchafire. You can get tickets here!
